In addition to our research, The Foundation for Plastic Surgery supports ongoing medical training and education of the next generation of plastic and reconstructive surgeons.

Plastic surgery requires 16 years of training, the longest of any surgical specialty. This includes:

• 4 years - undergraduate education
• 4 years - medical school education
• 5 years - surgical residency
• 2 years - plastic surgery residency
• 1 year - specialized training in hand, craniofacial, cosmetic or microvascular
   surgery.

This is a solemn commitment by young surgeons who each day devote very long hours with minimal compensation. The Foundation recognizes this sacrifice and provides assistance to young surgeons, as well as aggressively supports their continuing education. The Foundation's activities include:

• Sponsoring medical education programs for plastic surgery residents and medical students
• Hosting regional and national conferences
• Providing scholarships to undergraduate students
• Offering fellowships to medical students and postgraduates
• Funding promising new research
