Unfortunately, in today's health insurance environment the financial reimbursements
for surgical procedures that correct congenitally deformed children are extraordinarily
low. UCLA Plastic Surgeons operate on 750 children with these disabling deformities
each year. At least 70% of the children are insured by California Children's Services
which usually indicates low income.
These highly technical and demanding surgical procedures, which must be performed
between the ages of three months to three years of age, are reimbursed at such
a low level that it is impossible for a surgeon to have a practice substantially
devoted to their care. For example, reimbursement for the repair of a cleft lip
and/or palate - including multiple visits before and after surgery - is approximately
$650.

In order to enable young highly skilled surgeons to devote a substantial portion
of their practice to this type of surgery and provide care to the those in need,
financial supplementation is required. The Foundation is committed to raising
funds to help offset costs to support surgeons who perform this type of reconstructive
surgery.
Your generosity can help patients in physical and financial need receive reconstructive
care - the results of which will last a lifetime.
